Things to Do in Las Vegas With Kids: Week of August 5-11

It's the last stretch of summer, and this week is all about the back-to-school countdown. CCSD students head back to class on Monday, August 10, so these next few days are your window for one more adventure, plus a whole lineup of free school-supply giveaways and haircuts to get the kids ready. Here's what's happening around the valley.

Wednesday, August 5

Kick off the day atCandy Scatat Ice Age Fossils State Park, where kids use Tootsie Rolls to recreate animal droppings and learn to identify critters by their tracks. Drop in anytime from 9 to 11 a.m. Entry is $3 per person and free for kids 12 and under.

In the evening, theEnd of Summer Carnivallands at Silver Mesa Recreation Center in North Las Vegas from 6 to 8 p.m. with games and activities for the whole family (a FunZone membership is required). Prefer something with a little more adrenaline?Summerlin Paintballhosts a Free Paintball Night from 5 to 10 p.m. with free entry, free rental gear, and 250 paintballs included.

Cooling off is easy this week too. TheSilverton Aquariumruns interactive stingray feedings daily, and the7-Eleven $1 Slurpee Happy Hourruns weekdays from 3 to 6 p.m. all month for rewards members.

Thursday, August 6

TheSunset Swim at Black Mountainin Henderson is the move for a hot evening, running 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Admission is $3 for kids and $5 for adults. Earlier in the day, little makers can build a critter atPipe Cleaner Critters(Ice Age Fossils State Park, 9 to 11 a.m.), and teens have their own event withSnack and Show: Princess and the Frogat Clark County Library, pairing the movie with themed snacks.

Running all week:Dino Safari: A Walk Thru Adventureat Springs Preserve, featuring larger-than-life animatronic dinosaurs. It's included with general admission or free for members.

Friday, August 7

Start with a free ice cream cone.Story Time with Sierraat the Centennial Chick-fil-A runs 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with a special appearance from the Cow. Craft fans can drop byEric Carle: The Very Hungry Caterpillarat Summerlin Library (10 a.m. to noon, ages 2 and up).

For active kids,Fun Fridays at Aquatic Springsbrings an inflatable obstacle course and rock wall, with admission from $1 to $3. And once the sun goes down,Neon Night at Spy Ninja HQturns the whole park into a blacklight playground starting at 9 p.m.

Need supplies? TheBack to School Fairat Blue Diamond Library (noon to 2 p.m.) hands out free school supplies plus free Kona Ice.

Saturday, August 8

This is the big day for back-to-school help. Two standout events:

  1. Back to School Giveawayat Neighborhood Recreation Center in North Las Vegas, 8 to 11 a.m. Free school supplies and haircuts, first-come, first-served.

  2. Cox Back to School Fairat the Boulevard Mall, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free backpacks, on-site immunizations, and community resources.

Make a morning of it with theLas Vegas Farmers Marketat Downtown Summerlin (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) or pony rides and barnyard animals atHorses4Heroes Back to School Family Farm Days(9 a.m. to noon). Craft time returns withCome Out and Clay Jr.at Sunrise Library using air-dry clay, no kiln required.

Sunday, August 9

Wander theNeighborhood Market DTLVin the Arts District from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., a new weekly market behind Akin Cooperative. Dress up forTea Time: Piratesat Enterprise Library at 2 p.m., with stories, games, and snacks for ages 3 to 10. Hungry?General Admission Family Brunchat UnCommons lets kids 12 and under eat free.

Monday, August 10 (First Day of School)

CCSD is back in session, so drive safely in those school zones and allow extra time. Celebrate surviving day one with a free flick.Free Movie Mondayplays poolside at Sahara Las Vegas at 7:30 p.m., and theDive In Movieat The Cosmopolitan screens Ocean's Eleven at 8 p.m. Space fans can explore theStarlab Dome Planetariumat Enterprise Library, andOutback Steakhouseoffers a free kids' meal with an adult entrée every Monday.

Tuesday, August 11

Wind down the week withFitness on the Lawnat Downtown Summerlin (7 p.m., bring a mat) or the freeShark Feedingat the Las Vegas Science & Natural History Museum at 2:30 p.m. New moms have a spot too with theSweetheart Circlegathering at 5:30 p.m. (registration required).
